Roy Merle Jameson

September 26, 1938 — July 30, 2019

Roy M. Jameson, 80, of Veto passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at home with his wife and children at his bedside. Born September 26, 1938, in Ritchie County, WV, to parents Paul and Mildred Jameson, Roy grew up under the care of his large and loving family and liked nothing more than playing sports with his brothers. He graduated in 1956 from Pennsboro High School and went off to the Army to proudly serve in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY, twice receiving the honor of Soldier of the Month.

On Dec. 26, 1961, he married Linda Oliver, who survives him, and later earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Marshall University. He put his education to use by teaching geometry at Warren High School for 31 years, and coached various sports, notably football, for most of those. A man of integrity, fair-mindedness, and devotion to those entrusted to his instruction, he was always looking for new ways to run a play or opportunities to provide personal tutoring outside of class for anyone in need. He was often prompted by his classes to regale them with jokes and stories from his paratrooper days. On the street or lately in the hospital, he ran into students and athletes who were eager to tell him of their fond memories and express their admiration for him and long-lasting gratitude for his help and gentle nature. He was always pushing himself as well and went back to school in mid-life to earn a Master of Science in mathematics from Ohio State University.

In retirement Roy sought out new skills and developed his talents as an artist, playing guitar, painting in acrylics and oils, and writing a book of poetry. He was a member of Oxbow Country Club, where he was always improving his swing and scored two holes-in-one, but cherished most the camaraderie and competition with his golfing buddies. He was a man of great faith, which was evident in the way he served others in his community. He worked tirelessly to build a strong church family at Living Faith United Methodist, where he was among the core group that founded it.

Roy and Linda were inseparable to the last and enjoyed a routine of church, socializing, eating out together, and watching the Indians strive for the pennant each year.

He placed his friends and family above all. He is survived not only by Linda but their three children - Kelli (Scot) Burdette of Granville, OH; Matt (Samrawit) Jameson of Polaris, OH; and Kristen Jameson (Massood Rahimi) of Westerville, OH - and two grandsons: Nathan (Sara) Burdette of Columbus, OH, and Justin Burdette of Granville, OH. Also surviving are sister Jackie Nichols of Parkersburg, WV, brother Mel (Sherryl) Jameson of Ellenboro, WV, brotherly cousin Lewis (Deanna) Pifer of Vienna, WV, brother-in-law Lowell Jackson, sister-in-law Pat Jameson, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Estalee Cunningham and Wilda Jackson and brother Darel Jameson.

Many thanks go to Marietta Home Health and Hospice, Belpre Strecker Cancer Center, and to Doctors Dennis, Cawley, and Hershey.

Donations may be made to Living Faith United Methodist Church in memory of Roy, c/o Pat Evans, P.O. Box 51, Fleming, OH, 45729.
