Sara Jane Dennis, 88, of Marietta, died Sunday morning, June 23, 2019. Born October 6, 1930 in Marietta, she was the daughter of the late Maurice K. and Helen Samantha Dorman Racer.
Sara graduated from Marietta High School in 1948 and received her Bachelors Degree from Marietta College in 1952, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She had been a substitute teacher and retired in 1994 as a bookkeeper for Family Health Services, following 17 years of service.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she had been active with the Hand Bell Choir. She also had been instrumental in forming the Hand Bell Choir at St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she became its Director. Sara also was a member of the Marietta Welfare League, had been a docent at The Castle and Campus Martius Museums, was a member of the National Society of Arts and Letters, and was a past board member and officer of Hellenic House. She had fulfilled a dream by traveling with her husband aboard the Orient Express, touring Europe.
Sara is survived by three sons, Michael Dennis (Heike), Marietta, James Patrick Dennis (Brooke), Alpharetta, GA, Andrew Dennis, Dublin, Ireland; grandchildren Aaron, Quinn and Sarah Dennis and Shandra Porreca; great-grandson Preston Porreca, and her beloved cat "Shadow".
She was married October 26, 1952 to Raymond E. Dennis, Jr., who died Nov. 2, 2016.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, with The Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at a reception in the church, immediately following the service.
