Shirley Jean Penland

Shirley Jean Penland, 87, of Lowell, died Monday, November 21, 2016, at Marietta Center. She was born September 19, 1929 in Hockingport to Logan Jackson and Plessie Jane Simmons Ice. Shirley had worked at Broughton's Restaurant. She had also worked at Quantico Marine Base for many years when she and her husband lived near the base. Shirley had been active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Lowell Unit #750. She loved flower gardening and baking. Shirley is survived by three sons, Larry Edward McIntire, Sr. (Norma) of Marietta, Garry Wayne McIntire (Patricia) of Beverly and Denver Cecil McIntire, Jr. of Lowell; two daughters, Karen Sue Bookman (Gary) of Newport and Sandra Kay Hockenberry (Larry) of New Matamoras; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; a brother, Harry Ice (Gerry) of Marietta and four sisters, Norma Jean Cain of Aiken, SC, Bonnie Belle Sams of Hockingport, Joann Reed of Reedsville and Betty McIntire of Lowell. She was preceded in death by the father of her children, Denver Cecil McIntire, Sr., and by her second husband, Robert D. Penland, Sr., in 1999, an infant son, Harry Lee McIntire, daughter, Judith Ann Brilliant and brothers, Charles, Garland, and Arthur Ice and one sister, Maxine Cain. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home with Pastors Jim Fernihough and Don Hart officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Lowell. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until time of service. Donations to L-A Fire & Rescue.
