Susan Marsch, 100, formerly of Marietta, died Tuesday evening, January 20, 2009, at Hill View Retirement Center, in Portsmouth, where she had resided since June, 1993. Born November 7, 1908, in Marietta, she was a daughter of the late Karl D. and Anna Schultheis Marsch. Miss Marsch was a graduate of Marietta High School and of the 1930 class at Marietta College, where she had been a member of Chi Omega and Beta Beta Beta Sororities. In 1943, she received her Masters Degree from the University of Cincinnati. She had taught in the Business Education Departments of Manchester, Fairfield and Marietta High Schools, retiring in 1965. Susan had been a part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ all her life, having officially joined on her confirmation day, April 1, 1923. She had been active in several social-service and professional organizations. During WWII, she served three years in the Women's Reserve of the United States Coast Guard at Long Beach, California and was discharged in 1946, with the rank of Lieutenant. She is survived by several cousins. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Ann. Abiding with her wishes, her body has been cremated. Susan asked that she be remembered during a Sunday morning worship service at her church. That "Service of Remembrance" will occur this Sunday, January 25, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., to be held at First Congregational Church, 318 Front Street, Marietta, with The Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
