The Reverend Monsignor Edward John Kakascik, 84, of Marietta, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013 in Marietta. He was born January 14, 1929 in Mingo Junction to Louis and Victoria Strupe Kakascik. Msgr. Kakascik attended St. John Vianney Seminary. He was ordained on May 28, 1955 in Steubenville. Father Ed brought Christ to thousands of people in his assignments at St. Stanislaus and St. Peter's in Steubenville, as well as in Miltonsburg, Ozark, Adena, Mingo, and more recently, at St. Mary's in Marietta from 1987 until his retirement in 2003. During his time there, he was instrumental in combining St. Mary's Grade School and Middle School into its current location. Through his leadership, the Parish Center, named in his honor, was built adjacent to the school. He is survived by a brother, Tom, and his wife, Darlene of Mingo Junction and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, James and Louis, and three sisters, Charlette Kakascik, Clare Tucker and Mary Catherine Hinkle. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2014, at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption in Marietta. Visitation will be at the Basilica on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., where there will be a Vigil Service at 8:00 p.m. There will also be visitation on Friday morning from 9 until time for the mass. Burial will be in St. Mary New Cemetery, Marietta. The Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home is handling his arrangements.
