Viola Francis Schwendeman Dennis, 97, of Marietta, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Harmar Place. She was born on June 4, 1922 in Churchtown, Ohio, to Frank and Marie Thieman Schwendeman.
She graduated from Waterford High School in 1941 and was married to the love of her life, Ray Dixon Dennis, on November 25, 1946. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before he passed in 2009.
Viola is survived by her four children and their spouses, Bob (Linda) of Proctorville, Ohio, Bud (Mary), Darlene Harris (Don) and Rick (Brenda), all of Marietta; nine grandchildren, Julie Fuller (Chris), Scott Dennis (Stacy), Ryan Dennis (Suzanne), Lindy Lemley (Derrick), Don Harris Jr. (Patti), Lisa Turner (Tom), Jackie Hussey (Steve), Tracy Sparks (Don) and Amy McCracken (Kevin); 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; granddaughter, Mindy Nicole Dennis; her parents; brother, Dale Schwendeman; and sister, Grace Huck.
Viola was employed during her early life by the Marietta Chair Factory, Pfaff's Restaurant, and The American Pottery. She shared many memories and stories of the hardships of The Great Depression and WWII. She retired from Marietta City Schools and enjoyed many happy years of retirement with her husband. Viola was a wife and homemaker, but most of all a mother and grandmother, where she will be remembered for her famous "grandma's noodles" and her loving gentle spirit. She loved gardening and working in her yard. Viola loved her family and will be dearly missed. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, with The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell celebrating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with a Vigil service held at 3:00 p.m.
