Walter Lee Finkel

Walter Lee Finkel, 83, of Marietta, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He was born November 14, 1927 in Marietta to Walter Francis and Louise Josephine Augenstein Finkel. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School and in 2000 received his associates degree in Biology from Washington State Community College. Walter was a Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving from 1945 to 1949, and retired as a sergeant from the Ohio Military Reserve in 1955. In his younger years, he worked for his parents in their Peerless Cleaning business. He then worked for Ohio Bell, and in 1955 started working for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1985. Walter was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a life member of American Legion Post 64, doing his duty on funeral detail for many years. Also a life member of the DAV, AmVets, 40&8, Elks Lodge 477 and Moose 1823, as well as the Ohio Military Reserve. He enjoyed flag raising at games and events, was an avid reader and loved his family and community. Walt will be deeply missed by his loved ones, including his wife, Joanne Lee Hrycenko Finkel, daughter, Cathy Harper (Michael), sons, Tim, Kelly
and Kevin, all of Marietta, grandchildren, Jason Harper (Teara), Kaelly Erb (Joel), Matthew Harper (Bethany McFarland), Stephen Harper, Nicholas and Benjamin Finkel, Lance Baker (Lauren), five great grandchildren, Griffin Erb, Aamon Harper, Austin McQuade, Aaron Smith and Camryn Baker, dear friends Angela Finkel and Patti Finkel of Marietta, sister, Joan Andrew (Milton) of Santa Rosa, CA, three brothers, Robert J. Finkel (Lois) of Gahanna, Mark Finkel (Geri) of Greenville, SC and William Finkel (Patty) of Prior Lake, MN, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorotha Jeanne Finkel, brother, Dave Finkel and grandson, Samuel Harper. Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. There will be a Vigil Service at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in New St. Mary Cemetery, with full military honors. Donations may be made to Right Path c/o Marietta Community Foundation, P.O.
