William Lloyd "Bill" Knowles, 77, of Fifth St., Marietta, died at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, in Marietta. He was born July 13, 1932 in Belpre to Cecil R. and Hazel Ryan Knowles. He was a graduate of Belpre High School and received his B.S. in Education from Ohio Northern University. He had attended the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1952 to 1956. Bill was a Methodist pastor, having worked in Chatham, Huntsville, Westminster, and Gibsonburg, Ohio. He had also pastored the Warner and Zion United Churches of Christ for 30 years. He had been a teacher in Gibsonburg and had worked in the History Department of Marietta High School for 33 years. He enjoyed reading and studying the bible, Cleveland sports teams, camping and his pets. Bill is survived by his wife, Joan Berry Knowles, they were married on December 23, 1957; two daughters, Lisa Knowles-Maciag and Debbie Knowles Lambeth (Joe), all of Marietta; seven grandchildren, William Lambeth of Cincinnati, Richard Lambeth of Marietta, Chantel Lambeth of Birmingham, AL, Daniel Lambeth of Marietta, Zachary Maciag (Amber), Nathaniel Knowles-Maciag and Rebecca Knowles-Maciag, all of Marietta and a sister, Joyce Ingold (Eugene) of Belpre. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Knowles. Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Full military honors will be observed at the church on Sunday. The family will greet friends following those services in the fellowship hall at the church. Private committal services will be in Newberry Cemetery in Little Hocking on Monday. Friends may call at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
